Landing on the beach can be associated with a malfunction, but in this case – everything is under control. The Scottish Barra airport, located in the Outer Hebrides, has three runways, the surface of which is … sand on the beach. It is so compact and hard here that it is possible! The runways are marked here by wooden piles driven into the ground, and the dates of flights depend on the tides – during high tides the beach (i.e. also the airport) is under water.
Although the beach airport seems to be quite a breakneck solution, the port successfully serves about 10,000 people annually. The only line that operates here is Loganair, with flights coming to and from Glasgow. The airport is open from Monday to Friday for several hours a day. The belt is not suitable for use in the dark. The only exception here are starts in emergency cases – then the lighting is provided by … car headlights. Despite such extreme conditions, Barra airport provides its travelers with parking, car rental and transport to nearby tourist attractions.
