As with most small airports, the location of Donegal Airport is extremely picturesque – on the west coast of Ireland, in the small village of Carrickfinn, right on the Wild Atlantic Way tourist trail.
This port is considered by many to be the most beautiful landing site in the world. Located about 15 minutes drive from Dungloe and Gweedore, 45 minutes from Letterkenny and an hour drive from Donegal, there are two daily flights to Dublin and up to six flights a week to the port of Glasgow. As recent as in 1980, in the place where the runway is now, grass was growing, and in 1986 the airport was put into use.
Since then, it has been expanded and modernized, among others, with government funds, private investors and county self-government authorities. In the 1990s, the runway was extended to 1500 meters, and a new terminal building was opened, equipped with modern navigation devices. Currently, the only airline offering permanent connections is Stobart Air.
