It is from here that the climbers begin their hike to the summit of Mount Everest. Landing at Tenzing-Hillary (formerly Lukla) is the first adventure that has thrilled many a passenger before they even managed to start climbing the highest peak in the world. The runway is only 527 meters long, 20 meters wide. What’s more, it lies at an altitude of 2,860 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by high mountains from everywhere. It ends with … a steep cliff.
For these reasons, only helicopters and small planes like de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter can use the airport. The airport is named after the first two conquerors of Mount Everest, which were Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. Both climbers contributed to the construction of this port. Weather permitting, daily flights to and from Kathmandu take place here. Often, however, flights are canceled due to poor conditions. Gusty winds, dense clouds and changes in visibility are common here.
